Hong Kong presents compelling opportunities in urban development, particularly through ambitious projects like the Northern Metropolis. A mega-project represents a HKD224 billion investment in known project expenditure alone, with total costs expected to far exceed this figure.
This create immense opportunities for urban development innovation across 300 sq km to house 2.5 million residents and 650,000 jobs.
With annual construction output projected at HKD300 billion, the city seeks advanced solutions in modular building, green technologies, and smart design to meet its 2050 carbon-neutral targets.
This aligns perfectly with Swedish strengths in eco-efficient designs and circular economy practices.
In 2025, Business Sweden Hong Kong organised Smart & Circular City Roundtables connecting Swedish firms with Hong Kong stakeholders on Northern Metropolis initiatives and circular economy solutions. Post-event interviews with Swedish companies revealed strong interest in meeting Hong Kong construction firms and architects, engaging government as key stakeholders, and discussing sustainability practices tailored to the city's urban challenges.
Building on this momentum, the Swedish-Hong Kong Green Resilient Smart City Platform in 2026, will position Swedish expertise at the forefront of Hong Kong's urban transformation.
This year-long program, featuring targeted stakeholder meetings, a networking reception, and sustainability-focused events, drives partnerships across three themes:
Construction and Architects
Government and
Sustainability.
Early participation unlocks priority access to opportunities in green building, policy alignment, and market entry.
