There are many large global companies in Västmanland, but also smaller companies both with and without export traditions. The large global companies account for about 80% of exports.
The region focuses and accelerates development in automation, energy, railways, and welfare and health. Priority is given to the development of competence in smart specialization among innovation and business promotion actors. It is of importance to develop collaboration with networks, innovation environments/clusters and initiatives nationally, within ÖMS, the EU and internationally.

Region Västmanland works towards increased internationalization of its business sector. The region is responsible for regional export cooperation in Västmanland and finance international research and development projects with actors such as Automation Region, Robotdalen, Regional Exportsamverkan with Almi Mälardalen as project leader, Mälardalen University and others.
